Little white dog

Little white dog
has a heart-shaped pink nose
barks at everything that passes
whimpers with delight,
tail wagging in anticipation,
when he sees me coming

Little white dog
has trusting brown eyes
that gaze longingly at strangers
who know the magic words
and whisper gently to him

Lonely white dog
lives in a concrete garden
surrounded by chicken wire
old and rusty, still strong enough
to keep him in, but never
to contain his affection

Little white dog
has a lonesome spot
behind his left ear
presses that ear to the fence
making contact
with my clumsy fingers
licks them in gratitude
